What is Machine Learning?
Machine learning is a complex branch of AI and computer science, and is the way in which AI learns to imitate human intelligence. A comprehensive web of algorithms and data, machine learning is used to make an array of classifications and predictions, which the AI then uses to generate content or characteristics that mimic that of a human.
The term machine learning was coined by Arthur Samuel back in 1959, defined by the man himself as:
“The field of study that gives computers the ability to learn without explicitly being programmed”
Ultimately, machine learning is a branch of AI that allows machines to become increasingly accurate when predicting outcomes without being programmed by a human.

What are the Four Types of Machine Learning?
There are three ways in which machine learning can happen, which are:
- Supervised Learning – machines are taught by examples
- Unsupervised Learning – machines study the input data, and identify patterns in the data to provide their own answers
- Semi-Supervised Learning – machines study vast amounts of raw and unstructured data, analyses labelled data and then use the correlations in the labelled data to define the raw and unstructured data
- Reinforcement Learning – the machine is given allowable actions and rules to learn from. When the desired goal is binary, the machine can learn from example. But when the desired goal is mutable, the machine must learn by reward and experience – the data that is needed is reinforced to the machine as a desirable outcome
