Supheakmungkol Sarin

Supheakmungkol Sarin is a decorated technologist, who is dedicated to leveraging the benefits of emerging technologies throughout society. Educated with an MSc and DSc in Information and Telecommunication Studies from Waseda University, Supheakmungkol began his distinguished career working as a Lecturer in the Computer Science Department of the Institute of Technology of Cambodia and as a Visiting Lecturer at the National University of Singapore. In 2005, Supheakmungkol became a Postgraduate Researcher at Waseda University, a role in which he specialised in the research of automatic image annotation, semantic indexing of videos and quality assessments of photographs. After five years of working with Waseda University, Supheakmungkol became an R&D Researcher and Technology Consultant for DOCOMO Euro-Labs – researching rich media communication, computer vision and cloud computing. He then became the County Engineering Consultant for Google Emerging Markets, kick-starting his 8-year-long tenure with Google in 2013.

Having joined Google in 2013, Supheakmungkol was promoted to Research & Engineering Program Manager for Google AI in 2015 and to Research & Engineering Program Manager for Google AI & Core Machine Learning in 2018. During his time working for Google, Supheakmungkol was responsible for leading market development in countries that did not currently have Google offices – such as Cambodia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Burma and Laos. He was also responsible for testing techniques for discovering AI blind spots and the management of inclusive and innovative data collection. In May 2022, Supheakmungkol was appointed as the Head of Data & AI Ecosystems for the World Economic Forum, whom he works with today to lead data policy and harness the full benefits of data to create a sustainable and equitable future. He has also been the Board President of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the Internet Society, working to bridge the digital divide, and is a Senior Member of the Institute for Electrical & Electronics Engineers.
