Carl Miller is one of the UK’s leading voices on cyber security, digital crime and the new frontiers of power in a connected world. An award-winning author, speaker and researcher, Carl explores how technology is reshaping politics, society and conflict. His work takes audiences deep inside the hidden systems driving modern life – from dark net assassination markets to state-sponsored disinformation campaigns. Known for his immersive storytelling and data-led insights, he brings complex digital issues to life in a way that’s clear, urgent and unforgettable.
In 2012, Carl co-founded the Centre for the Analysis of Social Media (CASM) at Demos, the UK’s first think tank institute dedicated to studying the internet’s impact on society. As Research Director, he has spent more than a decade building cutting-edge machine learning tools to analyse online behaviour. His research has covered electoral interference, extremism, conspiracy movements, digital governance and the evolution of cybercrime. Carl also helped pioneer the concept of Social Media Intelligence (SOCMINT) with GCHQ’s former Director, a term now used across intelligence and policing communities. He is currently Chief Strategy Officer at the DISARM Foundation, where he works to dismantle the digital architecture of disinformation and manipulation.
Carl’s first book, The Death of the Gods: The New Global Power Grab, won the 2019 Transmission Prize and has become a go-to guide for understanding how traditional power is being challenged by hackers, coders and algorithms. His investigative work has taken him to the front lines of digital disruption – into troll farms, cybercrime forums, information warfare units and even attempts to recreate his identity from leaked personal data. In 2024, Carl launched Kill List, a hit investigative podcast uncovering real murder-for-hire sites on the dark web. The show hit #1 on Apple Podcasts in multiple countries and won Best Podcast at the 2025 Broadcasting Press Guild Awards.
A regular voice on BBC’s Click, Carl has also written for Wired, New Scientist, The Sunday Times, and The Guardian. He is a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London, a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, and an Associate of the Imperial War Museum. As a keynote speaker, Carl addresses governments, businesses and global events, tackling themes like cyber warfare, AI manipulation, deepfakes, online radicalisation and digital ethics. His talks are dynamic, real-world and grounded in first-hand reporting – perfect for audiences who want to understand the realities of cyber threats in the 21st century.
