Phil Venables is the VP of Google and Chief Information Security Officer of Google Cloud. A thought leader in information and cyber security, Phil is also a specialist in enterprise risk, technology risk, cloud services and business resilience. With a reputation for pioneering cybersecurity initiatives focused on safeguarding critical infrastructure in financial services, Phil has held prestigious positions at leading banks, including Goldman Sachs, Barclays, Standard Chartered and Deutsche Bank. As a distinguished information and cyber security expert, Phil is highly sought after for speaking engagements, where he delves into the latest industry insights.

After completing a BSc in Computer Science at the University of York, Phil enrolled at the prestigious University of Oxford to earn an MSc in Computation. During his time at Oxford, he was involved in the development of highly parallel cryptographic software, showcasing an advanced understanding of algorithms and secure communication techniques. He landed his first role as a Software Engineer for Miscellaneous Petrochemical, Defence and Finance companies before landing the role of Information Security Manager at Barclays Bank. This was followed by the role of Global Head of Technology Risk Management at Standard Chartered Bank.

In 1997, he joined Deutsche Bank as a Chief Information Security Officer, moving on to work as Partner and Chief Information Security Officer at Goldman Sachs. Over the next 20 years, Phil held multiple roles with Goldman Sachs, including Chief Operational Risk Officer, Senior Advisor, Board Director and Operating Partner. Recently, Phil was appointed as President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology for The White House, demonstrating the breadth of knowledge and the respect he enjoys in his industry. Phil has been a member of several Boards, such as the Volatility and Risk Institute of the New York University Stern School of Business, HackerOne and Interos, to name a few.

The distinguished information security expert is also an advisor for the NASA Science of Security Program and co-founder of the Centre for Internet Security. He is also involved with the Foundational Cybersecurity Research and Implications of Artificial Intelligence for Cybersecurity committees. In recognition of his accomplishments, Phil was awarded the FS-ISAC Critical Infrastructure Award, the ISACA Wasserman Award and the SINET Innovation Award.
